Trump administration imposes new restrictions on retaining senior scientists

NIH ban on renewing senior scientists adds to assaults on its in-house research

The Trump administration has imposed a new restriction on employment that could push out thousands of NIH’s senior scientists: The agency cannot retain scientists in 1-year to 4-year positions that have long been routinely renewed.

It’s the Trump administration’s latest blow to NIH’s $5.2 billion intramural program. Less well known than the agency’s $39 billion extramural program, which gives grants to researchers at outside institutions, it includes basic research labs and a research hospital that treats patients with rare diseases—and helps showcase NIH’s work and build support from Congress, those familiar with it say.

Gov. Cuomo’s Plan To Use Clean Water Funds For Tappan Zee Bridge OK’d

ALBANY, N.Y. (CBSNewYork/AP) — Gov. Andrew Cuomo’s plan to use clean water funds on the new Tappan Zee Bridge was approved Wednesday by a key state board despite objections from environmental groups that said the money should support drinking water and sewer treatment projects.

The $256 million loan from the clean water fund would help pay for the $3.9 billion span being built north of New York City. Cuomo’s administration argues the novel use of the funds would help minimize the cost of tolls on the new bridge and pay for work associated with the construction that would protect the Hudson River Valley.

Jamaica Bay Greenway Coalition Meeting -- Saturday Nov. 2, 10:30 am at Ryan Visitor Center Floyd Bennett Field

!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Hello Canarsie,

I hope you are all well. I am happy to invite you to the next Jamaica Bay Greenway Coalition meeting, which will be held on November 2, 10:30 am at the Ryan Visitor's Center. This will be a very special coalition meeting because as Alice Friedman (from NYCDOT Greenways Department) will join us to introduce DOT's Jamaica Bay Greenway Implementation project and planning process. This is an amazing first step to begin to address some of the greenway issues that have been discussed in previous meetings and workshops. Also, during this meeting we wanted to focus sometime to defining our role(s) in this process as well as how we all mutually benefit from coming together.

As was discussed in the last meeting, we ask that you think about the following and come prepared to discuss:

o Your interests & goals for being part of this project & Coalition

o How you feel the Coalition can help your goals

o What you can do to contribute to the Coalition
