Free Resources for Disaster Resilience

Problem, Solution, SitRep, or ?:

No person or place is immune from disasters or disaster-related losses, and recent events have proven that even prepared communities can be overwhelmed in a state of emergency. Our reports provide guidelines and targeted resources for all stakeholders in a disaster response, including state and local governments, emergency medical services and health care centers. One Million K-12 Students Are Homeless in America!

One Million K-12 Students Are Homeless

(Image: Student silhouette via Shutterstock)Homelessness is defined as not having a regular permanent residence. This doesn’t necessarily mean living in the streets or in their vehicles – though many do. A large portion of homeless split their times between hotels, homeless shelters or crowding in with friends and families.  For many students, when they go to school each morning, they may have no idea where they will be sleeping that night.

The Case for Collaboration and Community Engagement as Cornerstones for Community Resilience Planning:

The goal is to empower our community to collaborate and to build strong community based partnerships to find innovative ways to effectively respond to disasters, rebuild economically stable and resilient communities that are environmentally practical and responsible.

Strong, sustainable communities are possible when stakeholders are informed and engaged in the planning process. This meeting, is the first of many we hope to have to facilitate and support honest, open community dialogue to articulate our problems, to brainstorm, to network and to hopefully discuss and find sustainable solutions that can be implemented.

Community Resilience Meeting, Discussion and Questions will be followed by Reception of Light Food and Refreshments Kosher. For additional information, contact Debbie Tiamfook (212) 470-5152, Rabbi Yossi (718) 272-6933

Have a great week.

Canarsie Eco Village Community Resilience Pilot

Canarsie Healing Center & EcoVillage - Community Resilience Pilot Initiative

Canarsie Eco Village & Natural Healing Center is one proposed initiative from the community as part of an encompassing plan for the future of Canarsie. Said local Rabbi Yosef Serebryanski or Rabbi Yossi, as he is fondly called by everyone " An eco-community can be an integral sustaining power for Canarsie to weather any future storms, natural or man-made.It is important for any group of people living together to have clean water and food during any disaster. If it is freely available then it also means there is no need for rioting, pillaging or mayhem as it allows people to continue to co-exist peacefully."

Join Sandy-Impacted Communities to Light the Shore!

The Municipal Art Society of New York - mas.org

On Tuesday October 29th – the anniversary of Superstorm Sandy – groups from across the region will be lighting up the coastline to acknowledge the impact of the storm and the on-going resilience challenges we collectively face.  Groups in Staten Island, Red Hook, Lower East Side, in Connecticut and all down  the Jersey shore will join together with flashlights and candles along the coast.  The goal is to have the entire Sandy-impacted coastline illuminated!

All communities are welcome to join their friends and neighbors and line the coast in solidarity for a resilient future!  Information about specific community meeting spots and times are shown below:

Lower East Side
Time: 6:45PM to 8:15PM
Where: East River Park

Canarsie Community <Light our Way to Recovery> October 29, 2013, Canarsie Park 6:30pm

Light Our Way To Recovery is a candlelight commemorative gathering of the constituents of the Canarsie community, one of the many disaster impacted communities on the Eastern USA coastline. This event is given in remembrance of those persons who lost their lives as a result of Hurricane Sandy; to honor the people who volunteered and who continue to help; to highlight the need for support for Canarsie disaster victims who continue to struggle to rebuild, recover and survive the emotional maelstrom caused by the life changing events of October 29th 2012.
