Canarsie Healing Center & EcoVillage - Community Resilience Pilot Initiative

Canarsie Eco Village & Natural Healing Center is one proposed initiative from the community as part of an encompassing plan for the future of Canarsie. Said local Rabbi Yosef Serebryanski or Rabbi Yossi, as he is fondly called by everyone " An eco-community can be an integral sustaining power for Canarsie to weather any future storms, natural or man-made.It is important for any group of people living together to have clean water and food during any disaster. If it is freely available then it also means there is no need for rioting, pillaging or mayhem as it allows people to continue to co-exist peacefully."

If Hurricane Sandy taught us anything at all, it is that we have to exploring different ways of building or rebuilding communities that are not so susceptible to massive destruction and catastrophic loss. Given this area's recent experience with disaster, common sense dictates that we need to look at other ways to coexist in our community because the current traditional forms of community breed wasteful consumerist lifestyles, the destruction of natural habitat, urban sprawl, poor planning, corporate-factory farming, and over-reliance on fossil fuels. These trends that must be changed to avert ecological disaster and to create healthy lifestyles and fulfilling quality of life for constituents.

We should be able to build a community of sustainable equality and more localized food sovereignty, in which the control over food and farming rests more with the local community that consumes it rather than transnational corporations and political objectives. We are capable of developing ecological food production and farming, in which safe and healthy food can be grown to meet fundamental human needs.
