SYNOPSIS

Intensifying low pressure well south of long island will move farther out to sea through tonight as weak high pressure builds from the west.  A weakening Alberta Clipper will move through on Thursday . . . followed by a high pressure ridge building in through the end of the week.  Another Alberta Clipper low will pass late Saturday . . . reinforcing the cold air across the area.  Unsettled weather is possible during the beginning of next week. 

TEMPERATURES

Today: cold; high around 15°F with wind chill values as low as 13 below (-13°F); lows around 6°F with wind chill values as low as 5 to 10 below (-5°F to -10°F). 

Thursday: cold; highs in the lower 20s with wind chill values as low as 8 below (-8°F) in the morning; lows around 9°F with wind chill values as low as 8 below (-8°F) after midnight. 

Friday: cold; high around 20°F with wind chill values as low as 9 below (-9°F) in the morning; low around 20°F. 

Saturday: highs in the mid-30s; lows 10°F to 15°F with wind chill values as low as 0°F. 

WINDS

Today: windy; northwest winds 15 to 25 MPH, gusts up to 35 MPH; northwest winds tonight 10 to 15 MPH. 

Thursday: northwest winds 10 to 15 MPH; northwest winds around 15 MPH at night, gusts up to 25 MPH. 

Friday: west winds around 15 MPH, gusts up to 25 MPH. 

PRECIPITATION AND TIMING

Mostly sunny skies are on tap for the rest of the day today.  The probability of widespread significant precipitation is low for the end of the week and next weekend.  There’s a slight chance of snow showers in the afternoon on Thursday.  The chance of snow is 20 percent.  Mostly sunny conditions are forecasted for Friday, but clouds will increase Friday night into Saturdaymorning.  The chance of snow on Saturday is 50 percent, which will drop to 40 percent on Sunday.  While accumulating snow is possible, it looks to be light at this time.

A Special Weather Statement is in effect until further notice for bitter cold and low wind chills that are expected in the New York City area.
