Block and Tenant Associations Workshop Schedule

All Canarsiens interested in starting or strengthening a Block, Condo/Coop, or Tenant Association

Date:  Tuesday, February 18

Topic:  Canarsie Resilience: Building a Stronger Community Block by-Block

• Discussion of Block/Tenant/Condo workshops series
• Learn more about NY Resiliency and  Bridge Streetservices

Work Group Assignment: Participants will review and begin completing a 12-month action plan

Date:  Tuesday, February 25

Topic:  Foreclosure Prevention, Insurance and Legal Advice Clinic

• Meet with Mortgage, Legal and Insurance experts to learn about your housing concerns

Work Group Assignment: Participants will develop strategy for identifying and responding to community concerns around housing (mortgage, legal and insurance) at the block level

Date:  Thursday, February 27

Topic:  How to Start a Block/Resident Association   

• Learn the first steps you need to take to set up an association on your block or in your building.

Work Group Assignment: Participants will review and begin completing a 12-month action plan

Date:  Tuesday, March 4

Topic:  Association Governance, Elections and Bylaws  

• This hands-on workshop will help you write simple yet effective bylaws for your association.
• Learn best practices for running your association, holding elections and writing effective bylaws.

Work Group Assignment: Participants will identify group structure, meeting frequency and next steps

Date: Tuesday, March 11

Topic: How to Organize, Execute and Fundraise for an Event

• Learn creative ways to raise money to support your association’s activities.
• Your association is more than just a block party! Learn how to create and run exciting (and low-cost) events and activities on your block or in your building.

Work Group Assignment: Each working group will identify, design a community-wide/accessible/relevant event for 2014.
